I have never been a fan of perfume. Some of the really expensive ones smell okay but they make me sneeze. But this time of year I can understand why people have tried to reproduce the scent that i wake up to each day. The wild roses are in bloom. The rest of the year they are an unsightly bramble that grows in the ditches and scrubby places on the side of the lawn or woods. But come June (yes its still May but in a normal year they are June flowers as are laurel and poppies and peonies-all of which are in full bloom right now)that give off this heady scent that pervades the house and grounds. The bloom itself is simple and unpretentious unlike their aristocratic relatives.
Of course they aren't the only scent makers out there. The climbing hydrangea, cultivated roses, double peonies and butterfly bush are all contributing to the intoxicating mix. It's a good time to be gardeners or honey bees who are happily gathering up all those scents and tastes for the honey.
