I've never understood why everyone doesn't love dandelions. Kids love them especially when they turn into blowing machines but somehow they grow up and start to think that a lawn should be this great expanse of solid green. BORING. I love having green lawns but they are so much more interesting dotted with bright yellow flowers. And as far as I'm concerned the best part if that no one plants them, you don't have to water or feed them- they just give off their brilliance for a short time and then fade into the general greenness. Then there's their edible qualities for followers of Euell Gibbons. But just yesterday I discovered another reason to champion their existence. Bees love them. I watched one of my honeybees go from one to another to another- i think about 25 in all before taking his pollen collection back to the hive. Another bee was collecting from little purple plants which i think are speedwell-a humble little weed with a tiny purple flower that grows everywhere. They are another I would have weed whacked or pulled up in the garden before I realized they are an important food source for my ladies.
